Self-bailing white-winged scoter decoy by JOSEPH W. LINCOLN (American, Accord, Massachusetts, 1859-1938), from a Harry V. Long rig, with the ''H.V. Long'' brand on the bottom board. Has some light wear but overall in very good original condition. Catalog note: The self-bailing design was Lincoln's idea, so the rough water birds were lighter and the self-bailing keeps them afloat. The decoys were set out on long strings so, they had a hole angled in the front which came out the bottom, and one in the rear continuing the long line of coot or brandt. Long was an avid sportsman and collector of Americana and decoys. His importance and biography is found in ''The Harry V. Long Collection of A. Elmer Crowell Decoys'' by Stephen O' Brien Jr. exhibition catalog for ''The Sporting Sale'' 2009 at Copley Auctions. 7''h, 7-1/4''w, 20''l.
