Two Civil War Era Lottery Advertisements from Maryland and Kentucky
A pair of Civil War-era Lottery advertisements from the states of Maryland and Kentucky. The first is produced by C.S. McDonald & Co., Lottery Agents for the State of Maryland. 4pp of a bifolium, measuring 8.25" x 10.5", Baltimore, dated August 1853. Advertising lotteries to be drawn August 6th, 8th, 11th, 13th, 15th, 18th, 19th, 23rd, 25th, and 30th, with an additional "Mammoth Lottery" of $150,000 to be drawn on August 27th. The second broadside produced by Z.E. Simmons & Co., Managers for the Shelby College of Kentucky. 1p, 8.5" x 11" (sight), Covington, Kentucky, dated December 1864. The broadside markets the "Havana Scheme!" with Class 626 to be drawn on December 31, 1864, featuring Capital Prizes of $40,000, $20,000, etc., amounting to $318, 750. Each has flattened folds, with some areas of edge chipping and dampstaining. Overall very good.
