Group of Civil War Ephemera related to Edward Dickson Hicks II (1831-1894), including two documents signed by General Felix Zollicoffer (b. Maury County, TN 1812, d. Kentucky 1862) and Lt. Col Frank McNairy (b. Nashville, 1825, d. Fort Donelson, 1863). 1st item: Leave of absence document for Edward Dickson Hicks, Adjutant Major, First Battalion TN Cavalry, CSA, "having tendered his resignation," signed from headquarters by F.M. McNairy and Gen. Zollicoffer, Oct. 8, 1861. Measures 9 3/4" x 7 1/2" on blue lined paper. Toning at fold lines, overall good condition, mounted to self-adhering photo album page (we have not attempted to remove). 2nd item: Leave of absence document for Edward Dickson Hicks, dated Sept. 4, 1861, also signed by Zollicoffer and by McNairy. 4 3/4" x 7 1/4" on lined paper. Small stains and hole on top edge, corner folds. (Note: Ed Hicks had married Mary Ann White, the niece of Zollicoffer's wife Louisa, not long after meeting her at the Zollicoffer home in the 1850s). 3rd and 4th items: Civil War Confederate horse appraisals, on a form titled Certificate for Public Animals, valuing horses at $125 and $100 respectively. One horse is specified as belonging to "3rd Lt. Hicks", the other as 1 horse from "McNairy's Cavalry". Signed by J. B. Clements and Moses Crun (?) and dated May 31,1861. 8" x 7". Note on back of the one for the horse in McNairy's Cavalry reads "I hereby transfer all my right title and interest in the within certificate to S.H. E.D. Hicks he having settled for the horse himself. Walter Brown Camp Cummings Sept. 19 1861." Left corners possibly trimmed, one has edge glued down, both with scattered minor stains. 5th item: Typewritten manuscript, "Nashville Tennessee as a type of the Rebellion: Extracted from the Police Record of Operations of Spies, Smugglers, Traitors, etc. occurring within the lines of the Union Army of the Cumberland, 1863; American Civil War - 1861-1865 Extracted by Charles H. Franklin, Warrant Officer, U.S. Army, Captain, Specialist Reserve March 25, 1935 - Historical Section, Army War College Washington DC 1935". An account of Confederate supporters in the Nashville area, including Andrew Ewing, John Overton, John Bass, Col. J. Acklin (likely misspelling of Joseph Acklen); General William Giles Harding (misspelled as Harding) General Washington Barrow, Dempsey Weaver, Richard Cheatham, John Kirkman, Sarah Polk, and Mark Cockrill; also an account of the fall of Fort Donelson and impact of Union Occupation in Nashville.
