Description
Pair of original, early 19th c. large steel plate engravings - WASHINGTON and LA FAYETTE. Each having eglomise ebony-painted and gilt mats with original gilt wood frames. The historic engraving of General George Washington done by Waterman Lilly Ormsby (1809-1883), after James Heath and the artist Gilbert Stuart's original "Lansdowne Portrait", a magnificent oil painting of the President. Together with a full length portrait engraving of the Marquis de Lafayette, circa 1824, from the admired print by Leroux, after a painting by Scheffer, published in Paris. Lafayette was the first foreign dignitary to speak before a joint session of the U.S. Congress. Image size 20 x 13 in, framed 26 x 19 in. Both very good condition, glass intact.
