Description
Two-sided cotton NSDAP flag, 52 x 52 in., in a most uncommon form, a relic adorned flag put together as a ‘hate’ flag. Starting as a normally constructed NSDAP flag, the flag bears a dyed black swastika at the center of a stitched-on white disc, all on a red field. However, this example is adorned with a myriad of Third Reich patches, tinnies, armbands, etc. Includes: two army bayonet green portepees; five collar tabs, including medical, infantry, and panzer; Luftwaffe flight collar tab; two radio qualification patches; fourteen various Third Reich tinnies; four triangular rank sleeve patches; fire police shoulder board; World War I Iron Cross ribbon bar; and more, all adorned around the center piece of a wool NSDAP Party armband. We believe this flag to have been captured in Aachen as many of the items bear the city name, including an Aachen Red Cross armband. The majority of the pieces have been attached by numeric cypher pins whose initial use was to indicate the regiment number on shoulder boards. This ‘hate’ flag is not unlike ‘hate’ belts which would be decorated with medals, patches, etc. of the enemy. This is the first ‘hate’ flag we have encountered. Numerous signatures of American soldiers are displayed on the white disc, though we were unable to find any information on the men. Some soiling throughout. This flag was clearly ripped from its original hanging, made obvious from the tear to the pole pocket at the top edge. An excellent and quite scarce World War II relic.
