Description
An excellent original British satirical etching by Isaac Cruikshank (1764-1811), titled 'Bless Thee Bottom, Bless The - Thou Art Translated', published S. W. Tores, Piccaddilly, Jan. 1, 1794, 9 in. x 12 in., and hand-colored. Using Shakespeare's famous lines from 'A Mid-Summer Night's Dream' as inspiration, the etching shows seated, donkey-headed gentleman dubbed 'Apollo' (Nick Bottom in Shakespeare), being gazed upon by a disgusted man with clenched fists, while artists at the right sketch a nude statue of a man. Very good condition.
