Description
(1877 - 1960) American painter and illustrator most remembered for his famous poster, modeled on himself, of Uncle Sam ordering 'I WANT YOU'. A great signed self-portrait executed in ink on a 3 in. x 5 in. card, showing the artist in profile. Together with a hilarious content T.L.S. 1p. 4to., New York, May 29, 1937, to ‘Dick’, in part: ‘…Fancying myself fairly intelligent it is with some reluctance that I admit to a few superstitions…It is bad luck to me to be one of three men with cigarettes and not one match. There is something sinister to me about spending a week-end stark naked in the refrigerator. I am foolishly convinced that misfortune would follow me if I was left alone in a cardboard shoe box…’. Collector’s emendation to top left of sketch, well-clear of text, otherwise both items very good.
