Item Details
Description
[AFRICAN AMERICANA - CIVIL WAR]. FRANK, Robert. Partly printed volunteer enlistment document, 26th New York Colored Volunteers, or 26th USCT. Lee, New York, 4 January 1864.

8 x 9 3/4 in. partly printed document (fold lines, with partial separation to some folds, some toning near folds, some ink smudges).

Document twice signed by Robert Frank, who is identified as a 44-year-old farmer having "black eyes, black hair," and "black complexion." It is also signed by Captain and Provost Marshal J.P. Richardson, Examining Surgeon W.A. Babcock and Recruiting Officer Jay Capson.

An HDS search returned zero results for a Robert Frank enlisted in the 26th USCT, though there were 2 New York results for that name (Robert Frank and Robert L. Frank) showing enlistment in the 31st USCT.

The 26th Regiment, United States Colored Troops, was organized at Riker's Island on 27 February 1864, and reported for duty at Beaufort, South Carolina, where it performed post duty there from April that year. It participated in the expedition to Johns and James Island the following July, including action at Battery Pringle, Johns Island, and Burden's Causeway. It engaged at Honey Hill on 30 November, and participated in demonstrations on Charleston & Savannah Railroad including action at Devaux's Neck, Tillifinny Station, and McKay's Point in December. Returning to Beaufort, South Carolina in January of 1865, the regiment remained on duty there until mustering out in August.
