Description
A framed grouping related to Private Robert F. Burrell (alt. Burrill) from his service during the Civil War in Company "I" of the 74th Illinois Infantry. The lot includes:
1. Ninth plate tintype studio portrait of Private Robert F. Burrill. Uncased.
2. Red cotton handkerchief with printed design.
3. Period autograph note of provenance. Reading in full: "This Handkerchief was carried through the war of the Rebellion by Robert F. Burrill of Co. I 74th Ill. who enlisted Aug 14th 1862 was at the Battles of Perryville, Stone River, Chickamauga, + Missionary Ridge. Was taken prisoner Feb 22nd 1864 8 am at Niles Ferry East Tenn. Was in Pemberton Building on Belle Isle and in Hospital No. 24 Richmond Va. until Feb 21st 1865. Was mustered out June 12, 1865 at Springfield Ill."
The note, possibly written by Burrell himself, gives a precise and full accounting of his enlistment with the 74th Illinois.
