Description
A fine Kiwai Island/Torres Traits drum; Kiwai Island, Western Province; Papua New Guinea.of classical elongated waisted form, the drum with incised designs to the handle and diamond patterns pigmented with red and blue at the base. Fine shiny darkened patina. The Drums of the Kiwai area are basically indistinguishable from the examples from the northernmost Torres Straits and Trans-Fly region and it’s likely that they were made in the Straits or The Southern Mouth of the Fly and traded into Kiwai. This drum is of a rare type, well documented in the literature in the early part of the 20th century.Field collected on Kiwai Island, By Marc Seidler, C. 1981. The drum measures 35 inches tall x 5.5 inches wide. The drum head has some perforations but still makes a tone when played.
