Description
A Fine and rare Tolai drum. Tolai People, New Britain; Papua New Guinea.Of unusual form, the drum with long narrow neck, small, raised ring, the lower flaring portion with stylized images of people and animals carved in low relief. A wooden cylindrical handle inserted into the neck; the upper portion somewhat rounded with remains of original binding at the top.Seidler’s notes indicate that this drum was from the Tolai of New Britain, though we have no idea who he purchased it from and no record of his visit there. While the shape looks to be highlands, the handle and raised carvings are uncharacteristic. It is in any case a fine old example and was certainly traditionally used. Acquired by Marc Seidler C. 1982. The Drum measures 31 inches tall x 8.75 inches wide.
