Description
LINCOLN CO., MAINE NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, silk on linen, two alphabet rows above "ELISABETH COW / ELL IS MY NAME", center with four alphabet and numeral rows above the signature of "SARAH MARSON / IS MY NAME 1779", lower fourth with two more alphabet rows above motifs of a flower basket flanked by two animals, possibly being dogs, rows divided by horizontal lines of stitching and encompassed by a linear frame. Housed under glass in a later frame. Dated 1779. 7 1/8" x 10 3/4" sight, 7 7/8" x 11 1/2" OA.
Catalogue Note:Â Identified as Sarah Marson of Pownalborough (now Dresden), Lincoln Co., Maine, born in 1769 to parents Stephen Paul Marson (1732-1775) and Elizabeth (Elisabeth) Cowell (1744-1832). It is not confirmed if she is the Sarah Marson (Marston), who married to Ebenezer Tileston in Boston, Massachusetts on December 9, 1790 and died shortly afterwards on June 7, 1791.

Condition
Very good visual condition with some scattered stains, two small holes to linen near center, a few spots of minor thread loss and breaks, some thread with fading/fugitive color, frame with some wear and surface scratches. Not examined out of frame.
