PETER BERNHART (ROCKINGHAM CO., SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA) FOLK ART FRAKTUR BIRTH AND BAPTISMAL CERTIFICATE, watercolor and ink on a partially printed paper form, completed for Magdalena Dorfflinger", born "March 1st 1800" in "Rockingham County" to parents "Johannes" and "Elizabeth", printed elements in German by Ambrose Henkel of New Market, VA. Drawn, scribed, signed, and dated "1812" by Peter Bernhart. Translated text reads, in part: "Let the original sin depart from her through Thy blood. Bind her to Thee through Thy spirit. May she be clad in Thee and the name we give her write in the book of Life unto eternal life." Unframed. Dated 1812. 8" HOA, 11" WOA (object).Ā

Catalogue Note: Peter Bernhart (act. 1794-1819) was schoolmaster and post rider residing in Keezletown, Rockingham Co., VA. He was the most prolific fraktur artist in the Shenandoah Valley.
