Item Details
Description

SIGNED PENDLETON CO., WEST VIRGINIA WALNUT PUNCHED-TIN-PANELED FOOD / PIE SAFE, rectangular chamfered-edge top over two bevel-lipped, dovetailed drawers with likely original pulls over two hinged cabinet doors concealing two fixed shelves, all raised on square legs, set with 12 factory-punched tins in total, raised panel back. Signed twice to interior back "Samuel H. Bodkin and John D. Keister made this safe and we defy [first: Steven Eberhard, second: Ben Harrison] to beat it". Yellow pine and poplar secondary woods. Retains an old refinished surface with warm color, tins with remnants of original green-painted surface. Fourth quarter 19th century. 56 3/4" H, 40 1/2" W, 18" D.
Catalogue Note: Samuel Bodkin (1856-1930) was a carpenter and farmer his entire life in Pendleton Co. John Davis Keister Jr. (1844-1939) also lived his entire life in Pendleton Co. He is only listed as a farmer in the census, which is not unusual for rural woodworkers during the 19th century. A quick search did not identify either Eberhard or Harrison, although they were undoubtedly local craftsmen in competition with Bodkin and Keister.
