Item Details
Description
Andy Katz (American, XX-XXI). "Three Jews and an Arab" photograph, n.d. Edition 2 of 300. Signed and numbered in pencil below the image. "Three Jews and an Arab" is part of Andy Katz's "Vanishing Jewish Societies" series. Shot from a rooftop near the Western Wall in Jerusalem, the composition presents three Jewish men dressed in prayer clothing walking in one direction, while an Arab man wearing a traditional headdress walks in the opposite direction. Katz's capture of their movement in opposing directions brilliantly referenced the Arab-Israeli conflict. In addition to a powerful political subtext, the photograph demonstrates Katz's undeniable artistry - depicting the scene from overhead to create a bird's eye view, employing dramatic black and white contrasts to create a wonderful formalist play, as well as capturing the gridlike geometry of the stone floor which serves to offset the striking silhouettes of the figures. One of Katz's most famous images set in a custom, museum-quality frame and hand-signed by the artist. Size of photo: 12.7" L x 18.7" W (32.3 cm x 47.5 cm) Size of frame: 23.75" L x 29.75" W (60.3 cm x 75.6 cm)

The following is Andy Katz's introduction to his "Vanishing Jewish Societies" series: "At the outbreak of World War II, there were close to ten million Jews in Europe. Following the Holocaust, that number fell sharply to roughly for million. Today the numbers are below two million and declining rapidly. For me, the decision to document the vanishing Jewish culture of Eastern Europe had urgency written all over it – especially as religious observance was being swallowed up by a tidal wave of growing secularism. I remember meeting five elderly men in a synagogue in Europe who told me that when they die, their religion would die with them. That thought continues to haunt me today even as this exhibit travels across the globe."

Andy Katz is a Sony Artisan of imagery - one of the original seven photographers who represent Sony's cameras. Katz has traveled across the globe, photographing a wide range of subjects throughout his journeys - "from the deserts of Namibia to the disappearing Jewish World of Eastern Europe to the rolling hills of the California wine country." His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the world as well as his own gallery in Healdsburg, California. In addition, Katz's work has been published in several books and featured on album covers for artists like Dan Fogelberg. Furthermore, Katz has received glowing reviews such as the following from Jonathan Silverman (author of For the World To See - The Life of Margaret Bourke-White), "The photographs of Andy Katz have the visionary quality that distinguishes all great work" and Audrey Wells (director of Under the Tuscan Sun), "Andy's images are as evocative as cinema. Every photograph tells an eloquent story."
