Description
This is a gelatin silver print photography by noted photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson (French, 1908-2004). This rather humorous photo depicts a crowd celebrating the 1937 coronation of King George VI in Trafalgar Square. Just as with the latest coronation, crowds lined the streets in the hopes that they might catch a glimpse of the new king as his carriage passed. Many slept on the streets overnight so has to claim a good vantage point. Despite the ado, one gentleman blissfully slept on. Stamped en verso by the photographer.
Cartier-Bresson is considered to be the founder of today's photojournalism. In early 1947, Cartier-Bresson, with Robert Capa and a few others founded Magnum Photos. Magnum aimed to use photography in the service of humanity, and provided captivating, widely viewed images. He is perhaps best known for his candid street photography, his coverage of Gandhi's funeral in India, the first six months of the Maoist People's Republic, and the Spanish civil war.
From the Upstate New York estate of Marshall and Kay Lee. Marshall was a well known collector of Pre-Columbian pottery and a talented and well-respected book designer in the publishing industry.
The frame is 14 1/4 x 11 1/4 x 1 1/4". The photo paper is 11 3/4 x 7 7/8". The image is 10 x 6 3/4"
