Description
A Lower Sepik mask, Possibly Keram River. East Sepik or Madang province, Papua New Guinea.Of typical form, the mask with concave face with bulging eyes, wide nose with flaring nostrils, and small mouth. The surface worn and abraded, though likely from water damage. This mask, likely a mid-century example, is well-carved and quite well-balanced. The surface is uneven and may reflect a period of disuse when the mask was stored and was water-damaged. Overall, a lovely carving.Acquired by Marc Seidler C. 1983. Mask measures 23 x 9.5 inches.
