A Lower Sepik drum, Sepik or Ramu River, Madang province, Papua New Guinea.Of typical hourglass form, the drum with rounded handle and two stylized mask-like figures, the upper and lower quadrants with small raised crocodile images, the whole, with intricate scroll work incised into a raised surface with remains of red and black pigment.This fine old drum has wonderful crocodile imagery carved to the sides and classical scrollwork patterns common to the art of the region. It is quite old and well-used.Acquired by Marc Seidler from Rudi Ceaser, C. 1882. Measures 22.5 x 5.5 inches.
