Description
Two Highlands Kina necklaces, Southern Highlands, Papua New Guinea.The necklaces of Yellow lipped clamshell, one cut into crescentic shape, incised, and attached to fiber bands pigmented red; the other an entire shell with red trade-cloth necklace and fiber. Yellow-lipped clam shells were traded into the highlands from the coast and were once objects of incredible value. They were traditional currency and also indicated status.Acquired by Marc Seidler in the Highlands c. 1981. The shells measure 7 x 7 inches and 7 x 6.5 inches.
