Item Details
Description
This Taino Bird-Man Puberty Fid and Smoke Blower exemplifies exceptional craftsmanship and technological expertise, firmly establishing it as a pinnacle of ritual artistry. Size: 7.25'' x 1.25'' x 1.25'' (18 x 3 x 3 cm); Height on stand: 6.25'' (16 cm). Meticulously carved with intricate three-dimensional details, this piece stands among the finest examples of its kind. Notably, the positioning of the hands next to the head reflects a gesture of friendship, as recorded in Columbus' encounter with the Taino people. In Taino belief, the bird-man and shaman were inseparable entities, embodying both avian and spiritual qualities. While fids were traditionally used for the initiation of young maidens into womanhood, this particular specimen deviates with a blowing port located at the top of the head. The deeply drilled eyes serve as a connection to the blowing tube or port, allowing the carved figure to exhale spiritual and therapeutic smoke, adding a mystical element to the shaman's practice. This distinctive feature adds to the uniqueness and significance of the artifact.Crafted from jasper-like stone, this piece hails from the Taino culture of the 8th to 15th centuries. It was formerly part of the collection of esteemed Art Historian Roy Craven before finding its place in the L. Roberts collection in 1989. Curated by Larry Roberts, author of "Taino Sculptures, Art of the Gods," "Taino Hallucinogenic Implements Inhaling the Cosmic Dust," and the upcoming "Taino Zemis and Other Heads of State, ReDiscovering Caribbean Art," this artifact underscores the mastery of the Taino people in creating a distinct pantheon of deities and ancestral representations. The Taino culture's exceptional craftsmanship, precise polishing of semiprecious stones, and innovative technological skills appeal to our aesthetic sensibilities. Although the precise artistic techniques may elude our understanding, the conceptual grasp of their art remains sublime.
