Description
Oil painting attributed to Chester Harding (1792-1866) from the estate of Lois Ann Berner, Gibsonia, PA. The artist Chester Harding was great friends with the famous American statesman and lawyer, Daniel Webster. Harding painted numerous portraits of Webster, including several which are now owned by the Hood Museum of Art, the Massachusetts Historical Society, the National Portrait Gallery, the Newark Museum, the Boston Athenaeum, the Shelburne Museum, the IBM Gallery of Science and Art, the Rhode Island School of Design, The Redwood Library and Athenaeum, the Museum of Fine Arts Springfield, the Cincinnati Art Museum, and the New York Historical Society, among others. This is an original painting of Daniel Webster, attributed to Chester Harding by the Chicago Appraisers Association. This portrait is similar to the one owned by the Shelburne Museum and is believed to have been painted by Harding from a daguerreotype of Webster, ca 1847-48 (See: A Truthful Likeness: Chester Harding and His Portraits by Leah Lipton, p. 116).
