Item Details
Description
A unique example of 20th century modern design - an Alexander Girard poster for Textiles & Objects, Herman Miller, 1961. Titled "Objects Selected by Alexander Girard for Herman Miller, Inc." Textile & Objects was a retail store in New York City that blurred the lines between high and low, art and design, function and form. A dynamic trio - Eames, Nelson, & Girard - worked together to curate a selection of folk art from around the world for the shop. "Most of the objects come under the heading of the "delight department of daily use;" that is, things used simply for delight," said Alexander Girard about the objects chosen for Textiles & Objects. While it was a critical success, the store was open for less than two years as the concept was ahead of its time as the public was not quite ready to add such colorful and exotic objects to the typical 1950s homes. From the estate of Anna Kenedi, prominent first female designer and architect for Herman Miller. Dimensions: 34.25"h x 24"w x 1.25"w (framed). In good vintage condition as poster was trimmed and there is slight fading due to age. Alexander Girard (1907-1993) was an architect, interior designer, furniture designer, industrial designer, and a textile designer. Girard is widely known for his contributions in the field of American textile design, particularly through his work for Herman Miller (1952 to 1973), where he created fabrics for the designs of George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames. In 1952, Alexander Girard was hired to head the fabric and textile division at Herman Miller. Girard worked with George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames to form a design team that has influenced the fundamentals of design throughout the United States and the rest of the world. During his career, Girard won several design awards and was selected for many commissioned projects. His work has been exhibited in many influential institutions across the United States and abroad. In 1962, Girard and his wife established the Girard Foundation in Santa Fe to manage their art collection that numbered over 100,000 pieces, including toys, dolls, icons, and other ethnic expressions.
