Description
An intriguing woodcut print in colors on paper titled "Haniwa (2) Clay Image with Flower" by Japanese artist Kiyoshi Saito. Signed in white bottom right. Titled, annotated 39/150, and dated 1958 in pencil in bottom margin. A flattened abstract figure holds an abstracted red rose. Kiyoshi Saito (1907-1997) was a sosaku-hanga artist in 20th-century Japan. Saito was one of the first Japanese printmaking artists to have won at the Sao Paulo Biennale in 1951. In 1956, Saito was sponsored by the State Department and the Asia Foundation to travel and exhibit around the United States and Europe. His work became particularly popular among Western collectors during the 1950s and 1960s. From a private collection. Dimensions: 23"h x 19"w x 1.5"d (framed). In very good vintage condition.
