Description

George Cruikshank Lot of 5 Handwritten Pieces With Drawings

George Cruikshank (1792-1878). Archive of five handwritten items circa 1845-1860, some with original sketches and doodles. Sold at Swann Auction Galleries in 2004 for $632. Please see images for more details on content and condition.

The collection consists of:

1.) Autograph Letter Twice Signed, "George Cruikshank", 1p, January 24, 1845. Integral address at verso in Cruikshank's hand. To W. H. Merle, Esq. in Paris. Expected folds. Loss from opening tear at seal. Toning, soiling, scattered foxing.

2.) Autograph Letter Signed, "George Cruikshank", 1p, London, August 28, 1860. To "My dear Mrs. Taylor". This letter may have gone unsent as the verso contains some doodling and a portion of a manuscript. Folds, creasing and soiling.

3.) Autograph Manuscript Signed in the title, "George Cruikshank", 1p, "A Protest Against Ritualism / A Proposal to the Pope", no date. Folds and creases. Moderate soiling and staining.

4.) A draft of a poem titled "The Protestant House that Jack Built", 1p, unsigned, undated, with drawings at recto and verso. Edgewear and moderate soiling.

5.) A draft of a letter to "My Dear Sir", 2pp, on one sheet of blue stationery, unsigned, undated, with a sketch at verso. Uneven right edge. Soiling throughout, with staining to lower left portion.

Cruikshank was a British caricaturist and book illustrator, praised as the "modern Hogarth" during his life. His book illustrations for his friend Charles Dickens, and many other authors, reached an international audience. In his lifetime he created nearly 10,000 prints, illustrations, and plates. There are collections of his works in the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
