George Cruikshank ALS Re: Meeting to See Drawings
George Cruikshank (1792-1878). Autograph Letter Signed, "Geo Cruikshank", 1p, on his personal stationery, 4.5" x 7", London, December 8, 1866. Abrasions and residue at verso from previous mounting. Folds and creasing. Moderate toning, soiling and discoloration. Accompanied by an albumen print head and shoulders portrait of Cruikshank.
Cruikshank's letter to Thomas Morton, Esq. reads, in full: "My friend has written to say that he will be in town today - and that he can call upon me, either on Sunday or Monday at 3 o'clock p.m. I therefore beg to know, by the bearer, which of these days will be most convenient to you for me to bring my friend to see the drawings."
Cruikshank was a British caricaturist and book illustrator, praised as the "modern Hogarth" during his life. His book illustrations for many authors, including his friend Charles Dickens, reached an international audience. In his lifetime he created nearly 10,000 prints, illustrations, and plates. There are collections of his works in the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
