A signed first day cover by civil rights activist and Air Force veteran, James Howard Meredith. Measuring 6.5" x 3.5", United Nations, New York, dated June 26, 1965. A First Day issue cover signed "James H Meredith", celebrating the 20th anniversary of Paix Progrés Coopératio. Official Geneva cachet. Light toning and soiling at the edges. With a bold and large signature.
James H. Meredith (b. 1933) became the first African-American student admitted to the racially segregated University of Mississippi in 1962, following the intervention of the federal government. He faced several lawsuits and riots before finally being admitted on October 1, 1962. Meredith's admission into the university was a huge milestone in the history of civil rights in the U.S. He ultimately graduated with a degree in political science.
