Sioux Chief High Bear 19th Century Cabinet Card Photo
Cabinet card portrait of Native American Sioux Chief Matowaungata, also known as High Bear, circa 1880, 4.25" x 6.5". Photo is mounted on photographer's card, identified as L[ucien].W. Stilwell of Deadwood, South Dakota, with "High Bear, Chief" printed in the negative at the lower portion of the photo. Chief High Bear is shown wearing an eagle feather headdress, a hairpipe bone breastplate, fur wrapped braids and metal armbands, and holding a beaded quirt. Corner bumping, scattered foxing and soiling. Evidence of previous mounting at verso. Overall, in very good plus condition.
