Dr Alfred Scharf was an art historian, collector & art dealer who emigrated from Berlin to London in 1933, where he remained for the rest of his life.
The Apulian chous is perhaps related to the vases listed in A. Trendall and A. Cambitoglou, The Red-Figured Vases of Apulia, Oxford, 1978, chapters 20-21, 'The minor vases of the workshop of the Darius and Underworld Painters'; compare ibid. vol. 2, pl. 237:8.
