Native American, North America, Pacific Northwest Coast, United States or Canada, Kwakwakaíwakw, Haida, or Tlingit, ca. late 19th to early-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden club hand-carved from a single piece of hard wood, traditionally this tool was used for clubbing fish once fisherman have extracted them from the water. The piece is carved with intricate formline totemic motifs- anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures including orca (killer whales) and a crouching being that might represent the mythical ocean chief, Kumugwe, who is often depicted with sea creatures. The tubular handle is incised with diagonally radiating lines and the handle is pierced for a suspension cord to secure the club to the hunter's wrist.
