Description
Single folded lined letter sheet headed: Camp, near Fort Ethan Allen Oct. 4 th 1862, written by 2 nd Lt. Hartwell Freeman, 40 th Mass. Infantry to his father, reading in part:The Army Hymn by W. Holmes (Oliver Wendell Holmes), which you enclosed in my letter was very good so was the other piece. Col. Porter told us on dress parade last evening that our regiment would be very soo organized into some brigade and placed in the field. There are various rumors afoot in the camp today in regard to rebel commissioners, flag of truce on the Capital &c, &c. I do not know how much truth there is in any of them…As the Col. Was riding out on battalion drill theother day his horse threw him down an embankment and fell on him he was bruised quite badly, but is now quite well. Our Chaplain arrived today. He looks quite young. I believe he came from Salem. I do not know his name yet...There is a rumor in camp thatwe are to go to Ship Island next Monday. I don not credit it. Writes about inacurate news in the papers and how it upsets some of the commanding officers. From a group of letters recently found in a Kentucky estate.
