Description
butter dish and cover c.1875, inspired by an Aesop's Fable, only one of two known. Designed as a grey hare riding a mottled green tortoise, all on an oval stand with an orange border and turquoise radiating centre. The top half of theshell forming the lid and the hare the handle. The Tortoise and the Hare is one of Aesop's Fables about a race between unequal partners and has attracted conflicting interpretations. It is itself a variant of a common folktale theme in which ingenuity and trickery (rather than doggedness) are employed to overcome a stronger opponent, 7 1/2"h.
