DAN MASK
African (Liberian), Nyor Diaple region, Dan People, Mande, early 20th century, carved wood. Deangle mask of short, round form having medial ridge that flows to the tip of the narrow nose, bisecting the split eyes above a pointed chin with feminine features. This mask relates to a group described in Fischer and Himmelheber's definitive study of Dan art, Die Kunst der Dan in 1976 and in the manner of "The Master Sculpture" Uopie (Liberia, 1890-1950). This mask closely resembles a mask previously contained in the Musée du quai Branly by Uopie showing similar recessed, horizontal eye canals.
