Description
[Civil War] Niles Drinking Cup, with ID
Brass telescoping drinking cup with lid. Lid stamped “NIles Drinking Cup / Patented June 5th 1860.” Underside etched “F.O. Brotherton.”
The identification can be linked to two different soldiers: Frank Brotherton, who enlisted on 22 February 1865 with the U.S. Navy and served on the U.S.S. Pontiac but deserted on 19 June 1865; or possibly Frederick Brotherton of Decatur, Michigan who enlisted as private and mustered into Company I of the 17th Michigan Infantry on 16 August 1862, but died of disease less than a month later at Washington, D.C. on 12 September 1862/
