Description
Early CDV of General Braxton Bragg, CSA
Oval (carte-de-visite) CDV portrait of the controversial Bragg who was among the top tier of ranking Confederate field officers This uncommon view depicts the general without any rank insignia on the collar. No back mark. Bragg was 'old Army' with gallant service in the Mexican War. A major general at Shiloh, he led a corps and was promoted to full general on April 6, the same day that A. S. Johnston was killed. He replaced Beauregard as commander of the Army of Tennessee and led that resolute body to defeat at Perryville in October 1862. Another lengthy withdrawal occurred after the fighting at Murfreesboro as Rosecrans brilliantly maneuvered Bragg out of Tennessee during the summer of 1863. In spite of achieving an incredible victory at Chickamauga, the Army of Tennessee emerged disorganized with the high command once more bickering, and the moment to press the strategic initiative lost. Bragg besieged Chattanooga but was pushed back into Georgia by U.S. Grant after the fight at Missionary Ridge. He then resigned, yielding to General J.E. Johnston who led the army through the apex of the Atlanta campaign. Always a favorite of President Davis, Bragg took up a senior staff position at Richmond. He returned briefly to field duty under Johnston in North Carolina until the end of the war. He died suddenly in Galveston in 1876.
Albumen trimmed on standard size mount. Second generation print. The signature is part of the print and not actual ink.
