Description
Jose Mondragon (Cordova, New Mexico, 1931-1989). Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Jude wood carvings, n.d. Both are signed in pencil beneath the base. A very special pair of wood carvings by Jose Mondragon of Cordova, New Mexico. One depicts Our Lady of Guadalupe (also known as the Virgin of Guadalupe) with seventeen individually carved rays surrounding her visage as she presses her hands together in prayer and wears a Cross around her neck. The other represents St. Jude holding a medallion with an impression of Jesus known as the Image of Edessa in one hand and a staff in the other. Jose Mondragon, also known as Jose Domingo for his patron saint, was an impressive carver whose religious works may be viewed in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Size of Our Lady of Guadalupe: 15" H (38.1 cm)
Here is the miraculous story that explains why St. Jude is holding a medallion with an impression of Jesus in this image. King Abgar of Edessa was seriously ill and asked Jesus to heal him. Jesus pressed his face onto a piece of cloth and gave it to St. Jude to present to King Abgar. Once he received the cloth, King Abgar was instantly healed.
