Description
This is an old master drawing after the original oil painting "The Martyrdom of Saint Philip" by Jusepe de Ribera (Spanish/Italian, 1591-1652). The present work was long classified as a martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew, the apostle who was skinned alive, but in 1953, U.S. art historian Delphine Fitz Derby pointed out its true subject of Saint Philip. On laid "Michallet" paper. There is a sketch of the saint on the paper verso.
