Description
Sir Joshua Reynolds (London 1723-1792), and his Studio; Pencil and gray watercolor Old Master Drawing on paper laid to old lined mat paper of "Portrait of Lord Heathfield of Gibraltar," the Governor with the Keys to Gibraltar and Cannon aimed downhill; also known as Commodore Keppel (1717-1790), he sat to Reynolds August & September of 1787, the oil purchased by the National Gallery in 1824. Archival matting and vintage APF George III gold-leaf double-sided frame. Good condition. Height of art 8 1/2 inches (21.5 cm.) X width of art 6 5/8 inches (16.7 cm.). NOTE: Believed to be the preparatory drawing by Reynolds and his assistants for the first etching for print maker John Boydell who commissioned the oil portrait. Another etching with slight changes of 1823 by J Young, Fitzroy Square & John Murray, Albemarle St. before its acquisition by the National Gallery is matted to back with plexiglass cover. PROVENANCE: The art with a collector's mark "M" to lower left corner recto not located in Lugt. to Estate of British Print Collector circa 1990.
