Italy. 1572. By Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598). From Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (world's first true modern atlas). Antwerp. A total of 2875 estimated maps were published of the first state. From 1570-1584. Estimated 443 loose maps survive. Or 15.4 %. Beautiful Renaissance-era Italy shows Corsica and parts of Sardinia and Sicily as well as the Dalmatian coast. Richly decorated with a title strap work cartouche, an eye-catching cartouche of Neptune, and a mermaid. A variety of ships adorn the seas. As well as a female mythological creature with characteristics of a Harpy and mermaid. Hand-colored. Copperplate engraved. 20 1/2 x 15 1/2”. Good condition. German text on verso, thick paper.
