An original etching by Jacques Bouilliard after Francois-Andre Vincent depicting the rape of Oreithyia (Orithyia) by Boreas. Jacques Bouilliard was a draughtsman, engraver, etcher, and publisher. He was active in Paris, but resided in London in 1796. See Nouvelles Archives de l'Art francais, 3rd series, no.2, 1886, pp.292-3. (source: British Museum website) According to the Getty Museum curatorial team, "Francois-Andre Vincent followed a model path for a French painter: he was the son of a portraitist and miniaturist, Francois-Elie Vincent (1708–1790), and enrolled in the studio of the artist Joseph-Marie Vien (1716–1809) as a teenager. At twenty-two years old, he won the prestigious Prix de Rome scholarship, granting him the opportunity to study art in Rome at the French Academy in the Palazzo Mancini, where he spent four years (1771–1775). In Italy he also met and studied with a leader of the French Rococo style, Jean-Honore Fragonard (1732–1806), and Fragonard's influence can be seen in many of Vincent’s drawings from the period.

Shortly after returning to Paris, Vincent was accepted into the Academie Royale, the prestigious arts institution that controlled exhibitions, teaching, and royal commissions in France. He regularly showed his work at the Paris Salon, the biannual art exhibition sponsored by the French monarchy and reserved for members of the Academie. He displayed impressive large-scale paintings of allegorical, historical, mythological, and religious subjects, as well as portraits. The French Revolution from 1787 to 1799 slightly disrupted his career; the Academie was abolished just as he gained the status of professor and the Institut de France was soon created in its place. He quickly became one of the Institut's leaders and spent much of the last years of his life teaching and running his studio, which was one of the most popular in Paris. He was recognized for his contributions and was one of the first people to be inducted into the Legion d'Honneur, the order of merit created in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte (1769–1821)."
