Item Details
Description
Western Europe, probably Italy or France, Neoclassical period, ca. 19th century CE. A fine ensemble of 4 gold-painted wood columns, all fluted and skillfully carved to exemplify the Neoclassical decorative aesthetic. Each of the larger columns stands tall upon a tiered base and crepidoma, exhibiting fillets at the drum and flutes on the upper shaft, all crowned by a composite capital. The Composite order combines characteristics of the ancient Greek-era Ionic and Corinthian columns, using both scrolling and acanthus leaves as decoration. Alternatively, the more petite pair display Corinthian capitals with fluting down their shafts and relief cherub motifs on their drums. These examples would have served as opulent ornaments in a Neoclassical household or building. Just think of all the splendor they will exude in your own home! Size of largest: 6.1" W x 26" H (15.5 cm x 66 cm)

Provenance: private Rancho Mirage, California, USA collection, by inheritance in 2020; ex-Dr. TDR Berreth, California, USA, acquired before 1982

#179133
Condition
The 2 more petite columns have some areas of chipping and old inactive insect holes, and all have expected nicks and abrasions commensurate with age. One of the larger is missing lead insert for base, but otherwise 3 are intact and all have a very nice presentation with good remaining pigments.
