Nicario Jimenez Quispe is an internationally renowned Peruvian folk artist, known for his retablos that draw from religion, history, and his own upbringing in the Peruvian Andes. His brightly painted figures are made from a unique mixture of boiled potato and gypsum powder, which he then shapes with a small toothpick-like piece of wood. His work has been featured in exhibitions across the United States, such as the San Francisco Craft and Folk Art Museum. His work was also chosen by the Smithsonian Institute's "Seeds of Change" exhibit and subsequently added to their permanent collection.
