Beautiful double-page map of California and western states, from the 1885 Tunison’s Peerles Universal Atlas of the World by H. C. Tunison. WorldCat lists this atlas as Tunison’s first atlas. This map also features a lovely vignette of “The Big Trees Maricopa Co., California.” Other 1885 California maps feature two vignettes, which would suggest they were published after this example. Great color typical of Tunison. Tunison's Atlas is a unique and interesting blend of styles, emulating the modern commercial publishers of Chicago (Cram, McNally) on one hand, and the hand-colored look of the still-active older publishers (Colton, Mitchell, etc.). Presented in vivid chromolithographic printing, the color areas are solid and even, much like the hand-colored maps of earlier publishers. This is why Tunison's maps are prized by collectors as excellent examples of a blended late 19th Century printing style.Shows topography, lakes, railroads, towns, etc. Few small bits of rust-colored marks.
