Magnifica e rara opera con i ritratti dei Gran Maestri dell’Ordine di Malta, dall’origine fino al 1872. I primi 8 fogli, che riprendono la serie stampata da Domenico de Rossi nel 1709, contengono 72 ritratti con brevi notizie biografiche: comincia con il Beato Fra’ Gerardo Sasso, il fondatore nel 1099 e primo Gran Maestro dell’Ordine e si conclude con Fra’ Emmanuel de Rohan-Polduc, in carica dal 1775 al 1797. I successivi due fogli, in prima edizione, continuano la Cronologia e contengono nove ritratti e nove medaglioni vuoti. Sono ritratti due Gran Maestri e sette Luogotenenti del Gran Magistero. I due Gran Maestri sono: l’Imperatore Paolo I di Russia, Gran Maestro de facto dal 1799 al 1801, e Giovanni Battista Tommasi, 1803-1805. I Luogotenenti sono: Innico Maria Guevara-Suardo, 1805-1814; André Di Giovanni,1814-1821; Antoine Busca, 1821-1834; Carlo Candida, 1834-1845; Philippe di Colloredo-Mels, 1845-1864; Alessandro Borgia,1865-1872; Giovanni Battista Ceschi a Santa Croce, 1872-1879. Quest’ultimo diverrà Gran Maestro nel 1879. I rami della celebre stamperia romana della famiglia De Rossi furono acquisiti dalla Calcografia Camerale, fondata nel 1731, che divenne nel 1870 la “Regia Calcografia”.

Magnificent and rare work with portraits of the Grand Masters of the Order of Malta, from its origins up to 1872. The first 8 sheets, which take up the series printed by Domenico de Rossi in 1709, contain 72 portraits with brief biographical information: it begins with Blessed Fra' Gerardo Sasso, the founder in 1099 and first Grand Master of the Order and ending with Fra' Emmanuel de Rohan-Polduc, in 1797. The next two sheets, in the first edition, continue the Chronology and contain nine portraits and nine empty medallions. Two Grand Masters and seven Lieutenants of the Grand Magisterium are portrayed. The two Grand Masters are: Emperor Paul I of Russia, de facto Grand Master from 1799 to 1801, and Giovanni Battista Tommasi, 1803-1805. The Lieutenants are: Innico Maria Guevara-Suardo, 1805-1814; Andre Di Giovanni, 1814-1821; Antoine Busca, 1821-1834; Carlo Candida, 1834-1845; Philippe of Colloredo-Mels, 1845-1864; Alessandro Borgia, 1865-1872; Giovanni Battista Ceschi in Santa Croce, 1872-1879.
