Description
Ca. 900-1100 AD.An iron axe head with a splendid, bearded design and a slightly curved cutting edge. The bearded-type axe head, characterized by its elongated lower section, enhances the functionality and versatility of the axe, allowing for efficient chopping, cutting, and piercing motions. The heavy butt features an opening for the attachment of a pole or handle. Intriguingly, one face of the blade exhibits decorative elements, consisting of three etched stars and three vertical lines on the butt. These markings suggest the potential use of inlays, which would have added both aesthetic appeal and symbolic significance to the axe. These decorative embellishments reflect the Vikings' attention to detail and their penchant for incorporating artistic elements into utilitarian objects. Size: L:140mm / W:140mm ; 850g Provenance: Private Oxfordshire collection; Formerly acquired on the European art market from pre-2000 collections.
