Near East, Anatolia, Turkey or Syria, Syro-Hittite culture, ca. 2000 to 1000 BCE. A remarkable altar vessel hand carved from a red-brown stone, the shallow basin resting upon 4 legs. The front protruding feet are in the form of zoomorphic heads, perhaps abstract bulls, supporting the bowl and representing important sacrificial animals. The vessel may have held offerings such as food, and portable altars such as this may have been home or private use to honor the gods and deceased. Size: 6.125" L x 3.75" W x 1.5" H (15.6 cm x 9.5 cm x 3.8 cm)
