Chinese Qing Dynasty Zitan Carved Brush pot. Carved in cylindrical body, thick, gently tapered to straight close round mouth rim, with deep concave to input the moabi brush, raised with short round foot base and carved with detail of imperial five claws dragon flying careening through cumulus clouds above thrashing Li-shui waves. Zitan is an extremely dense wood which sinks in water. It is a member of the rosewood family and is botanically classified in the Pterocarpus genus. The lumber is blackish-purple in hue, and its fibers are loaded with deep red pigments which have been used for dye throughout the ages. The entirety is encased in amazing relief carving which gives this box a captivating appearance. The zitan round armchairs shows smooth lustrous patina, dense hardwood with feathery fine grain.
