Item Details
Description
"An Introduction to Greek" by Henry Lamar Crosby and John Nevin Schaeffer, published by Allyn and Bacon, later printing of the first edition with '1947' imprinted on the title page and copyright 1928.

Hard boards, grayish-blue cloth, decorations and lettering on spine and front board [some cloth wear]; 5.1/4" x 7.3/4"; color frontispiece, xxix + 349 pages with c.50 monochrome illustrations + 48 pages of Greek-English & English-Greek Vocabulary and Index; a few pencil notes inside back-cover, very good condition.

"The glory that was Greece" means little to a student whose first Greek book presents only grammar. This Introduction to Greek gives him an insight into the brilliant achievements of ancient Greece, and at the same tie, in a logical, thorough and interesting manner, it develops in him the power to read Greek." [From the Preface]

"Originally published in 1928, it was used as a standard textbook for learning Attic (the Greek of Periclean Athens) for decades. It is a pretty complete textbook suitable for the first year of college Greek study. The authors adapt a number of classic Greek texts, and largely the book is designed to prepare the student to read Xenophon's "Anabasis" in a third semester class. Most of the Greek texts these days focus more on Koine (New Testament) Greek, which is very similar to (and derived from) Attic Greek, but usage is often a bit different. If you're only interested in reading Plato, Herodotus, Lucian, Xenophon, etc., then there are fewer beginning textbooks available to the aspiring student, and this is one that both fits the bill and has been, ahem, time tested."
