DESCRIPTION: Jem Mason jumping Lottery over a brick wall during the 1839 Grand National in Liverpool. Jem Mason was a champion English jockey. He won the Grand National in Liverpool in 1839. Oil on canvas. John Frederick Herring was a painter, sign maker, and coachman in Victorian England. Herring spent his spare time painting portraits of horses for inn parlors. His talent was recognized by wealthy customers and he began painting hunters and race horses for the gentry. In 1845 he was appointed animal painter to the Duchess of Kent followed by patronage from Queen Victoria for the rest of his life. MEASUREMENTS: 8" high x 9-1/2" wide; frame 2" wide. CONDITION: Loss to frame consistent with age and display. Canvas has been regulated and restretched. Loss of paint around back of horse. Craquliere.
