Description

William H. Taft TLS as Chief Justice "what my number is among the Presidents"

TLS, "Wm H Taft", 1p, measuring 8" x 10.5", dated December 9, 1929, Washington, D.C. A letter from the 27th President of the United States William H. Taft on Supreme Court letterhead written during his time serving as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Three horizontal creases throughout the letter, spotted staining through the middle and lower region, aged discoloration of the paper, beautiful signature and letterhead.

Within, Taft responds to a request for "enclosures" and refuses to answer a question asked in the original letter by Michigander Forrest E. Cook. In full: "I am returning here with the enclosures to your letter. The question as to what my number is among the Presidents is a subject of discussion in which it is useless for me to join."

Was Taft referring to his own middling rank as President or that he was our 27th President, somewhat clouded by Cleveland's non-consecutive terms?

William H. Taft (1857-1930) was the 27th President of the United States, serving a single term from 1909-1913. He is the only individual to serve as both the chief executive of the United States, as well as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, a position he attained after his presidency from 1921 until his death in 1930.
