Taft Appoints Richard M. Blatchford as Lt. Col. of Infantry
Partial-printed DS, measuring 16" x 21", March 9, 1911, Washington, D.C. An appointment signed by William Taft and countersigned by Acting Secretary of War Robert Shaw Oliver naming Richard M. Blatchford Lieutenant Colonel of Infantry. Horizontally stamped by the Adjutant General's Office on March 16, 1911 and signed by Fred C. Ainsworth in the top left corner. Minor paper toning and creasing throughout. Large and bold signatures from both.
Richard M. Blatchford (1859-1934) had a prominent military career, serving in the Spanish-American and Philippine Wars, as well as on the western front in World War I, where he was promoted to Brigadier General. A World War II naval ship launched in 1944, the USS General R.M. Blatchford, was named in his honor.
